The Colony is easily one of the hottest growing communities in the DFW Metroplex. Our church client had recently purchased property on Main Street, which was farm land at that time. The City had a Master Plan, and many of the roads and infrastructure were already in place. In a way, this church was a pioneer and pacesetter for The Colony, as it was virtually the first built structure on Main Street.
The Building Program included a Sanctuary seating 792, Chancel, Choir Loft, Chapel with multi-purpose use for Choir Rehearsal, Bride’s Room, Prayer Chamber, Fellowship Hall with multi-purpose use as 6 Classrooms, Administration, and typical support spaces. The total building area was 15,777 sf, and as always, the building was designed for future expansion.
The church wanted a contemporary design that looked like a church, but that would blend with all the high-end retail and commercial development soon to be built. Our design used a large Covered Drive-Thru, an absolute requirement in church design, at the main entrance and as an architectural focal point. On a bias axis, the exterior was defined by a series of tall walls resembling folding panels, and evoking the image of a tower in the center. These forms are articulated with a combination of familiar red and off-white brick, adding depth, texture, and a nod to traditional materials. The design made a bold, early statement along Main Street—and it was enthusiastically received.
When asked what he thought about the project design, the Building Committee Chairman said:
“I don’t like the design . . . I love it!”
